RentMatch

Our Goal

Our team was tasked with developing a product that meets the following judgement criteria:

Our Product

We came up with several ideas, including a personal finance app and a notifications app for suppliers and customers. Ultimately, we agreed on RentMatch. We recognized that people, ourselves included, have faced difficulties in finding a place to live. Likewise, landlords also face trouble looking for ideal tenants. Our web application aims to make the process more exciting and less daunting. The application allows users to login and create a profile. Landlords can then add a post for their rental property and renters can view these postings on their Home page. When a renter sees a post they are interested in, they simply click the heart button and it is then added to their Liked Rentals page. The landlords are able to see who liked their posts and their profiles to help them determine whether to accept them as applicants. There is also a chat feature that allows the landlords and prospective tenants to get to know each other better and inquire for more information.

Main Takeaways

For this project, my tasks included creating the landing page and adding the ability for users to add and edit a profile. In creating these pages, I explored questions such as “Who will use this app?” and “How will people use the interface?” to determine things like element placements and the messaging users get as feedback when clicking a button, for example. I learned to keep things simple and be purposeful when designing page layouts. I enjoyed participating in my first hackathon and it was a great learning experience.
